Kent Library's Access Services provides student, faculty, staff, and community guest user services. The Library Assistant works closely with other unit staff to provide excellent user services. The assistant trains and supervises student employees. The assistant also shares responsibility for multiple unit activities such as resource sharing, reserves, managing library collections, creating statistical reports, and other duties as assigned.
 
The Library Assistant II ensures safe and secure spaces for users, staff, and library collections. The assistant is responsible for opening, staffing, and closing the building, and for user and staff safety and security during regular and extended hours. During inclement weather, this unit may be the only presence in the library, providing users physical access to library services, resources, and facilities. The assistant is expected to work the following shifts during Fall and Spring semesters:

  • Two evenings a week, 1:30 pm – 11:00 pm (Monday–Thursday)

  • One afternoon/evening shift a week (2:30 pm–8:00 pm)

  • Every other weekend (Saturday 11:30 am–5:00 pm; Sunday 12:30 pm–11:00 pm) 

  • During the last two weeks of fall and spring semesters, the assistant works an adjusted schedule and closes the building, possibly as late as 2:00 am

During winter intersession, summer, and holidays, the assistant maintains a 30-hour work week, daytime schedule, with some Sunday afternoon hours.
 
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one information, collection, directional, and other assistance to students, faculty, staff, and community guests

  • Ensure the safety and security of library users, materials, and spaces

  • Train, supervise, and evaluate student employees

  • Process, maintain, and update reserves, resource sharing, and interlibrary loan materials

  • Create, update, and maintain the security of library user records

  • Share responsibility for collecting, collating, and distributing library statistics

  • Assists in library collection maintenance

  • Shares responsibility for determining, implementing, and documenting Access Services policies and procedures

  • Assist users and coordinate with the University's Department of Public Safety in emergency situations

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Demonstrated experience with, and an understanding of, excellent customer service

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and Excel

  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure in challenging situations

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team

  • Available to work evenings and weekends during the semester, and daytimes during intersessions and summers when class is not in session

  • Ability to move throughout the building often and transport 30 pounds daily with or without accommodation
