Position Title: Technical Services Librarian

Institution: William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri

Reports to: Library Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Technical Services Librarian position is a part-time non-exempt non-instructional faculty position responsible for the college’s daily and long-term library technical services areas of operation. This position plays a vital role for the library and the institution in providing access to print content owned by the library and encompasses the areas of Cataloging, Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, and other critical functions within the Sierra ILS.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives and interprets requests from internal and external patrons and uses interlibrary loan and MOBIUS or other appropriate resources to deliver requested print and electronic materials in a timely manner
  • In conjunction with the MOBIUS consortium, manages the shared library systems by administering various aspects of the operation and configuration of the shared ILS including patron records, courier calendar, loan rule determiner and lending tables, and connections to outside discovery layers
  • Participates in all steps of collection development and acquisition processes including analyzing purchase requests and replacement copy purchasing, shipment and order tracking, and physical processing of new materials
  • Conducts cataloging of physical and electronic individual text purchases in Sierra ILS, develops and implements procedures for processing all library materials
  • Responsible for maintaining delivery status changes on MOBIUS courier schedule
  • Maintains Hold Shelf and Course Reserves
  • Responsible for the Library’s fine and billing processes and oversees coordination with the Accounts Receivable Specialist to collect and distribute revenue
  • Recommends the adoption of bibliographic maintenance standards and authorities in an automated environment
  • Participates in long-range planning, working in collaboration with library leadership, library faculty and staff, and others to develop strategic plans supporting library technical services
  • Represents the library on regional automation committees and serves as the ILS manager and authority on automation issues
  • Assists in drafting bibliographic maintenance and automation policies and related documentation
  • Assists with entering library materials into the ILS in accordance with MARC standards using established utilities such as SkyRiver
  • Participates in faculty committee work, campus-wide professional development opportunities, and external professional development on best practices and emerging technologies
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student worker staff, makes assignments and schedules

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Time management and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency working with library technical services and specialized software
  • Working knowledge of metadata creation/maintenance
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn specialized software programs
  • Working knowledge of office equipment including printers, scanners, and copiers
  • Ability to handle diverse duties with no supervision
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to bend, lift and climb

Required Qualifications

  • American Library Association accredited or equivalent master's degree, or higher
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a higher education library environment
  • Minimum three years of supervisory experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Five or more years working in an academic or special library
  • Knowledge of III’s Sierra ILS, Discovery systems, and WorldShare

Working Conditions

  • 25-hour work week, office environment
  • Flexible schedule, some weekend and evenings may occasionally be required
