Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the Cataloging & Quality Control Specialist uses a variety of information systems to enhance access and discoverability of materials in the general collections and Special Collections in the Washington University Libraries in order to support the critical success of Washington University teaching and research; performs quality control related to vendor-supplied records; and resolves problems discovered in the Libraries’ catalog.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create original cataloging records and evaluate and enhance copy cataloging records for materials in the general collections and Special Collections in the Washington University Libraries in a variety of formats including books, electronic resources, and audiovisual materials, in multiple languages and according to national and local standards, in the ILS and OCLC Connexion. Supervise student workers when projects require student assistance.
  • Perform evaluative review and quality control on vendor-supplied bibliographic records, and identify, report, and resolve outsourcing workflow issues.
  • Perform name, series, and subject authority control work as necessary to maintain database integrity. Resolve problems identified with processing MARCIVE reports.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of local cataloging policies and procedures, and maintain documentation. Participate in cross-training with other cataloging staff.
  • Collaborate with public services staff to address questions and concerns regarding records in the online public catalog.  Improve and enhance records to resolve conflicts and optimize discoverability.
  • Provide support to users of Connexion software. Submit files of holdings to OCLC. Collect and maintain statistics.
  • Analyze, create and enhance non-MARC metadata records, according to national and local technical standards, for a variety of materials across the Libraries including digital collections, manuscripts, and archives in various non-ILS platforms.
  • Participate in library-wide and staff development activities. Perform other technical services duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in humanities, social sciences or related field; or minimum of 4 years of experience in library technical services in a public, academic, or special library setting
  • Three years of cataloging experience working with a variety of formats and languages
  • Applied knowledge of RDA, AACR2(rev), LCSH, LC Classification, MARC21
  • Knowledge of current trends in cataloging and emerging library technologies
  • Experience working with an integrated library system
  • Experience with OCLC Connexion
  • Internal or external customer service experience
  • Working knowledge of one Western European language
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in teams within the Library and University
  • Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population
  • Ability to meet deadlines and adjust priorities
  • Willingness to learn new skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience cataloging special collections materials
  • Experience with Innovative Interfaces Integrated library system
  • Experience in an academic library
  • Relevant coursework in librarianship
  • Working knowledge of two or more Western European languages
  • Experience with a digital content management system
  • Experience applying non-MARC metadata standards
  • Knowledge of XML

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $33,423 - $42,608 annually,
